WASHINGTON — The U.S. Capitol was on lockdown Saturday after shots were fired on the west front of the building in what appears to be an attempted suicide.

The shooter suffered from a self-inflicted wound and has been "neutralized," U.S. Capitol police said. The shooter's condition was not immediately known.

"The suspected shooter has been neutralized but the U.S. Capitol Building has been locked down as a precautionary measure," the police said in a written statement.

The police said they are continuing to investigate a suspicious package left on the lower west terrace that is related to the incident.

No one was being allowed to enter or exit the Capitol or the Capitol Visitors Center during the investigation. E-mails sent to the Senate offices and Capitol complex advised those inside to shelter in place.
