They were really close with the landing. On his twitter feed, Musk claims that it was a stiction problem in the bipropellant valve. That would explain what happened and be an easy fix. So the next one should do it.
My hunch as an engineer is that this isn't the only "easy fix" that is needed.

That's the temptation with these wickedly complex systems, to just think that you're one fix away from something that is production-worthy.

That's the type of stuff I'm talking about. How many 100's of billions could we save if we could make these rockets reusable?

And I think he's going to make tremendous strides in battery technology for cars.

I know he's a self promoter but I think he's backing up his promotion with results.

I'd rather have him as a hero than some guy who comes up with the latest "New App".
