Uh, if it isn't effective then it is a scam. Which is, you know, illegal.

And you downplaying the psychological harm that it can inflict seems pretty strange. Convincing or reinforcing the idea that someone's sexual orientation is a mental illness is one of the worst forms of bullying. Not to mention the electrical shocks and other forms of aversion "therapy".

It is just sick. There is no other way to describe it. There is nothing wrong with someone accepting their sexual orientation. It is, in fact, healthy. Trying to convince them otherwise is a pretty revolting concept. And not very Christian. Christ seemed to have no problem with homosexuals, although he didn't really think they should be marrying women. Which was one of the many ways he broke with the Old Testament.

<<"Acute psychological damage"?>>

What about teenage gays that are put in these programs against their will by their parents? I see potential for some acute psychological damage there! That's who Obama is advocating for, not voluntary adults. If they want a shock every time they get an erection thinking about a man, more power to 'em!
