"Our legal system sure doesn't believe it." Our legal system has gotten in way over it's head, so has the political system. Issues that are a matter of personal conscience do not lend themselves to judicial treatment. Once such issues are legislated, the system produces a schizoid society. For example radical liberals insist gender roles are a product of society's influence, but the development of a counter intuitive gender identity is not.
