Yes, humans have always had gods...

It just makes sense for an intelligent being to want some sort of answer for the world around them.

If you had been one of the original humans capable of intelligent thought you'd want to know why things were happening...

Why have the animals we hunt stopped coming to our area?

Why hasn't it rained for so long?

Why has my friend stopped moving and now acts like one of the animals that we hunted? DEAD

Intelligent beings want answers and if there aren't any they create their own.

The easiest and most sensible answer to those questions came from the invention of gods.
