shorting not necessarily a leveraged trade

Of course the shorting could be leveraged. If it goes against you. But the word "long" in your post is the operative one: that is where I made my mistake. Previously I was just buying on margin before splits (Compaq and Dell have - in the past- done great after splits) And then getting out. I got too giddy and too complacent and stopped doing the margin short term. And began keeping the shares long term.
If I ever have money again in that account, and I margin , I can assure you I have learned my lesson and the margin buying will be short term only!!!!!
Hope I get the opportunity!!!
Happy investing to all!
