relewis, [edited] after running the disk error check, were any errors reported and fixed? If your answer is NO, then I'd be suspicious of the popup message. If this was my computer I'd run the error check and fix again. Are there any unusual disk noises? Are you sure the popup is from Microsoft?

At least you did a backup.

If you have system disks and the error popup persists, you could consider getting a new hard drive and reinstalling Windows.

PS: somebody got this popup with a new HD tomshardware.com

This message is "typically" an indicator that all your spare sectors have been used and that any bad data will push you over the edge .... or perhaps that is your current condition.

Although there are other programs available, the only program that does a complete disk check with the best possible error recovery and defective sector recovery is Spin Rite coded by Steve Gibson and available from his website GRC. I have used this truly lifetime guaranteed program for over 20 years and strongly recommend it ... belongs in any PC tinker/builder/fixers toolbox.

Think it now costs about $80, depending on HD condition the program can take 24 hours or more. One caution, if you have a UEFI PC then you may need to temporarily alter some BIOS settings to allow legacy booting (varies by MB & BIOS manufacturer).

Its written the old fashion way (in assembly language) so program is really small compared to todays bloated stuff. Suggest looking around his site as used to have 2 very good Spin Rite videos I would recommend viewing.

Spin Rite, MEM Test 86+, Kaspersky Rescue Disk, Bit Defender Rescue Disk and a copy of your OS install disk are the minimum mandatory offline test/install tools every PC owner should have IMO. Spin Rite and depending on the OS are the only purchased products, rest are free.

Don't recommend ignoring that error. This is a new $42 1TB hard drive at Amazon.
