"used religious differences when they would serve political purposes"

Well, that's not new, and it's STILL going on......

Religion has always been a major divider or classifier of people...

Religion has ALWAYS been one of the major ways that people have identified and vilified other people.

In Rome in 200 AD the people would say things like, "That guy doesn't sacrifice animals, he's a Christian, kill him".

In Rome in 400 AD people would say things like, "That guy sacrifices animals, he's a Pagan, kill him".

Religion has caused a LOT of death and politicians use it for their own purposes when it suits them.

"a wall of separation between church and state"

The reason the courts stopped the reading of the Bible in "public" schools was that it PROMOTED a SPECIFIC religion.

What if several public schools in the U.S. had started reading and teaching the Quaran or any other religious text in the 1950's? Don't you think Christians would have gone NUTS and demanded that it stop?

The term "freedom of religion" not only entails the freedom to partake of your OWN religion but also the freedom to AVOID partaking of the religions of others.

If you want your kids to be exposed to a specific religion in school then send your kids to a private school affiliated with the religion of your choice.
