Authors boycott PEN gala over Charlie Hebdo award
......................................................................................

Canadian novelist Michael Ondaatje won the Booker Prize for his novel The English Patient Six prominent writers are boycotting a major US literary event over plans to give satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo a freedom of speech award.

Authors including The English Patient writer Michael Ondaatje and Peter Carey will not attend the PEN Literary Gala in New York on 5 May.

They said PEN - known for defending imprisoned writers - was stepping beyond its traditional role.

Islamists stormed the Charlie Hebdo offices in Paris in January.

Twelve people were killed during the attack, over the magazine's depiction of the Prophet Mohammed.

Authors Rachel Kushner, Teju Cole, Taiye Selasi and Francine Prose are also against PEN handing the Freedom of Expression Courage Award to Charlie Hebdo, as they are uncomfortable with the magazine's "cultural intolerance".

Booker Prize-wining author Carey told the New York Times that the group of writers felt PEN's role was to protect freedom of expression against government oppression.

"A hideous crime was committed, but was it a freedom of speech issue for PEN America to be self-righteous about?" said Carey.

"All this is complicated by PEN's seeming blindness to the cultural arrogance of the French nation, which does not recognise its moral obligation to a large and disempowered segment of their population."

The boycott has been criticised by the author Salman Rushdie, a former president of PEN who was in hiding for years over Islamist threats in response to his novel The Satanic Verses.

He said his friends were "horribly wrong" and he hoped nobody ever came after them.

Charlie Hebdo essayist Jean-Baptiste Thoret, who escaped the attack by arriving late to work, will accept the award on behalf of his colleagues.

PEN said it did not believe Charlie Hebdo's intent was to "ostracise or insult Muslims, but rather to reject forcefully the efforts of a small minority of radical extremists to place broad categories of speech off limits."

It added: "We will be sorry not to see those who have opted out of the gala, but we respect them for their convictions."

One day a fun loving “partier” and then transformed into someone more closely resembling a devout Muslim when he returned. That is according to his friend.

Rogerio Franca, who lived near the Tsarnaev family in Cambridge, Massachusetts, told jurors Tamerlan was a partier before his trip to Russia but transformed into someone more closely resembling a devout Muslim when he returned.

‘Most of the time he was drunk, most of the time he was high,’ Franca said of Tamerlan before his transformation. Afterward, his neighbor Franca said he saw Tamerlan in downtown Boston and he appeared ‘different’ – he grew a ‘big beard,’ dressed in white, and his wife was covered and submissive.

‘He asked me, you are not Muslim yet? I said no,’ Franca said. ‘I never expected he could ask me such a thing.’

Tamerlan was ‘consumed by jihad’.

Dr. Alveda King on Baltimore Riots: MLK Jr. Would ‘Be Heartbroken’

Martin Luther King's Niece on the Baltimore riots:

KING: My Uncle MLK JR Would 'Be Heartbroken'...

AFP

by Alex Swoyer27 Apr 2015Washington, DC 781

In an exclusive interview with Breitbart News, Dr. Alveda King, niece of the great civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., said if he saw these Baltimore riots, “he’d be heartbroken, I am.” High school students stormed the street in protests and riots Monday afternoon, throwing rocks at police officers.

The protests come on the same day as Freddie Gray’s funeral. He died earlier this month while in police custody.

“As I watched the protest, I’m reminded of several years ago… I was part of the first children’s march in Birmingham, Alabama,” King told Breitbart News. She added that those protests were peaceful and supervised.

“These children are not supervised—they are angry,” she said.

King said that she is very concerned that the Mayor of Baltimore has appeared to give these people an opportunity to destroy.

King went on to say when she sees the children on television running into a CVS and stealing—and police not doing anything because they have been told not to—that it’s not giving these children any compassion at all.

“That’s discouraging,” King stated.

She recalled what her father said to a group of people when their family home was burned in Birmingham, Alabama. She said he stood on a car and said, “Don’t riot, don’t destroy, go home”—“Go home and pray.”

“These children need help. They need guidance,” King added.

She is basically saying to the rioters, I will charge all six police officers to appease you. I wonder if the Obama administration is sending her the instructions for each communication. After Al Sharpton phoned his instructions in to Obama and Lynch.

One of the most disgusting things I’ve seen with this whole affair is the video of the mayor of Baltimore dutifully following Al Sharpton down the hallway and letting him speak for her to all the reporters’ questions. She had the “deer in the headlights” look on her face and kept looking to Sharpton to cover for her. It’s so nice to have Reverand Al in charge of policy in the city of Baltimore.

HE PUSHED FORWARD: Brave Garland Police Officer Advanced As He Brought Down Garland Terrorists(Pics)

Bearingarms.com ^ | 5-5-2015 | Bob Owens

More details are beginning to emerge about the incompetent Islamic terrorist attack on a free speech event held by the American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI) in Garland, Texas Sunday. Bearing Arms readers have asked for more details about how the actual shooting went down, and about the Garland police officer who used his duty sidearm to defeat two attackers armed with rifles within 15 seconds.

Please keep in mind that we don’t have all the details about the attack, the individual officer’s response, or the exact steps law enforcement took once the attack began, and that even if we had that information, we would withhold such details which may be useful for any other would-be terrorists attempting future attacks.

That said, we will provide analysis of some key pieces of publicly available information.

* * *

At the point of the attack, the two suspects apparently drove up and opened fire upon an unarmed security guard who was accompanied by a 60-year-old Garland police officer. The unarmed guard was struck the volley of gunfire. The veteran Garland officer then drew his duty-issue Glock pistol and opened fire on the suspects.

The officer killed one terrorist and wounded the other in his initial volley of return fire. Witnesses claim there was a brief pause, and then the officer fire two more shots to kill the still-moving terrorist as he appears to be reaching for a backpack. The entire event lasted 15 seconds, with heavily-armed Garland SWAT converging on the scene immediately afterward.

We’re not going to mention any more about the officer who took out these terrorists, only that to give an idea of his approximate position in relation to the terrorists as he engaged them.

The evidence markers at the bottom of the photo above show us a remarkable story, as they denote the final locations of the shell casings ejected from the officer’s Glock duty pistol. While every pistol is different from another in its ejection pattern, and the movement of the officer and the cant of his gun precludes us from knowing exactly where he was, there, is a distinct trial of shells showing that the officer was moving forward from the bottom left of the photo above towards the terrorists at the rear of the vehicle. He appears to have opened fire from 20 yards away, and fired at least a dozen shots by the time he reached an area near the traffic cones, roughly 7-10 yards from where the terrorists died.

Second photo taken from the opposite angle (below) seems to confirm this determined officer’s advance on the terrorists while firing.

Note: the damage to the vehicle driven by the terrorists was from controlled demolitions from EOD units ensuring that the car was not a VBIED (vehicle-borne improvised explosive device).

There seems to be a great deal of skepticism regarding whether or not the suspects were wearing body armor and whether they were armed with “automatic weapons” or “assault rifles” or something else entirely. Other photos from the crime scene suggest answers to those questions as well.

In the image above, we have drawn an orange rectangle around what appears to be blood-drenched halves of a soft body armor carrier worn by one of the terrorists. Most people don’t seem to grasp that there are multiple grades of soft body armor, that these materials degrade over time, and that the armor panels themselves do not often cover the entire torso, leaving gaps under the arms, below the ribs, and at the neck.

We simply don’t know if the officer’s bullets compromised the armor or went around the armor panels, but it is quite clear that there was soft body armor worn by at least one of the terrorists, and that it did not prevent him from being quickly taken out of of the fight.

Did the terrorists have “automatic weapons” as some mainstream media outlets initially claimed?

The media claim of “automatic weapons” or “machine guns” is always to be discounted until positively affirmed beyond the shadow of a doubt by firearms experts (not law enforcement public information officers), simply based on how difficult it is to obtain automatic weapons in the United States.

What we do have is two separate images that appear to show long guns recovered at the scene. We’ve taken part of the image above and flipped it vertically below in an effort to better determine what we’re looking at.

It isn’t anything we immediately recognize, though we can say for certain that it doesn’t appear to be any centerfire variant or an AR-15 or AKM. While the photo we have to work with is frankly horrible, our best guess is that The firearm we’re looking at is a most likely Kel-Tec SUB-2000, a popular and inexpensive pistol caliber carbine shown below.

Partially obscured behind evidence marker 34 is what appears to be a firearm with an AR-15-type front sight post, but the quality of the image and amount of the gun covered by the evidence marker make it impossible to tell what we’re really looking at.

Is this a legitimate centerfire AR-15? Is this a rimfire copy? Is this an airgun, designed to look enough like an AR-15 to win a jihadi his martyrdom?

Frankly, I’m tempted to think that we’re looking at a “faux-15? martyrdom special or a .22 clone, considering we’ve not be able to track down credible reports of the distinctively different reports of a centerfire rifle fire, and the confirmed Glock pistol-fire from the Garland officer.

We’re not ruling out the possibility that this was a centerfire AR-15 recovered at the scene, we’re simply noting that there wasn’t much evidence suggesting it was able to be brought into play by the terrorists.

* * *

No matter how you break down the details, this was an incredible display of bravery and marksmanship by this 30+ year veteran of the Garland Police Department, who not only resisted the natural urge to create distance between yourself and rifle-armed assailants, but who appears to have done precisely the opposite, and who advanced while firing accurately, bringing the attack to a swift conclusion without a single additional casualty once he brought his weapon to bear.

Determined people with good training and a decent handgun can indeed defeat the most zealous fanatic.

Get out there and train folks. Maybe one day it will be your turn to be the one standing on the line defending liberty from savagery.

Update: We’d like to thank Kaitian for finding a higher resolution image of the SUB-2000 used in the attack, which we’ve swapped out in the story above.

@bob_owens Don’t know if you know but there’s a higher resolution picture of the gun used. t.co

Obama Praised Baltimore Police He's Now Investigating
.............................................................................................

Just two months ago, President Obama held up the Baltimore police force as a model of unbiased community policing. Now he's investigating it for civil-rights violations.
What's changed?

In a March White House report on police reforms, Obama and his Task Force on 21st Century Policing praised Baltimore's force and its black chief for "implementing national best practices for policies and training," including "use of force" reforms. His task force even quoted Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts, who said he changed "outdated procedures" that "put officers at odds with the community."

Yet now the Obama Justice Department is investigating the Baltimore police for a "pattern or practice of discriminating" against the black community in "arrests, traffic stops and other operations." The federal probe is separate from an ongoing federal inquiry into the death of Freddie Gray, which focuses on the alleged misconduct of six Baltimore cops involved in his arrest, half of whom are black.

It's absurd to think that black police officers under the direction of a black police chief are inherently biased against young black men. So why does Obama keep charging police bias where mixed-race juries weighing all the evidence conclude there is none?

He was just as wrong in Sanford, Fla., where he and his attorney general scolded local police for not charging George Zimmerman with murder, as he was in Ferguson, Mo., and Queens, N.Y.

Why does he keep launching investigations into police discrimination and portraying cops as rabid racists? Because these probes provide a political justification for federalizing local police forces.

Last week, Obama said he's dispatching federal civil-rights officials to retrain cops in "every city and jurisdiction around the country" to be more culturally sensitive to urban blacks. This so-called de-biasing retraining, according to the same White House report, centers on "respecting" black perpetrators and teaching "de-escalation and tactical retreat skills" when confronting them in high-crime areas.

In other words, giving people space to break the law, which also means giving them space to ambush and kill cops. Five NYPD cops already are believed to have been shot by African-American criminals in just the past five months. Last week, 25-year-old officer Brian Moore was fatally shot in the head, allegedly by career criminal Demetrius Blackwell, while sitting in his car.

FBI crime data over the past decade show that African-Americans commit a disproportionately high 40% of all cop-killings — more than three times their representation in the population — yet this administration is forcing local police to lower their guard when dealing with blacks in crime-infested urban areas.

The policing reforms he's already forcing on more than 20 police departments across the country — including Seattle, Cleveland, Las Vegas, Newark, N.J., New Orleans, Philadelphia and Ferguson — are based on the studies of social psychologist Lorie Fridell, who argues legal definitions of unlawful discrimination are "outdated" and should be broadened to include even unquantifiable prejudice against people of color that occurs "outside our conscious awareness."

While she admits the link between blacks and violent crime is statistically strong — African-Americans commit 53% of all murders and are 10 times more likely to commit violent crimes than whites — she trains cops to resist that "stereotype" through what the White House calls "counter-stereotyping."

According to her PowerPoint presentations, Fridell recommends routinely testing cops for "implicit" or "unconscious" bias and "unlearning" their experience associating blacks with crime.

By retraining cops' minds to perceive blacks as less of a threat, Fridell and Obama hope they'll be less likely to use lethal force against black suspects. Fridell recommends banning all criminal profiling that takes a suspect's race into account.

By criminalizing crime-fighting, Obama is not only endangering more cops' lives but those of citizens they're sworn to protect.

Charleston, SC: Mob Of Black Teens Rampage Through City
..........................................................................................................
The Gateway Pundit ^ | April 29, 2015 | D Martyr

A large group of black teens rampaged through Charleston neighborhoods, targeting innocent people early Sunday.

The Post and Courier reported:

As many as 60 teens were roaming Charleston streets attacking pedestrians and drivers early Sunday, witnesses told police dispatchers in 911 calls released Tuesday.

All the teens were black, according to witnesses, and all but one of the people attacked were white. Still, it’s unclear if the attacks were racially motivated or sparked by the unrest in Baltimore, which followed the recent shooting death of Walter Scott, a black man, by a white North Charleston police officer. [...]

Terror could be heard in the voices of many of the callers, including a man who called from his car and said he was being blocked by about 50 teens.

“They just smacked my car,” he told the operator. “I’m flooring it in reverse. This is just ridiculous. … I’m getting the hell out of here, man. They just smacked another car.”

He said a group began beating a man....
