When You See How Close MD’s Prosecutor Is to Freddie Gray’s Attorney, You’ll Understand the Concerns

Maryland State’s Attorney and chief prosecutor, Marilyn Mosby, announced charges on Friday morning against six police officers in the death of Freddie Gray.

Now, Mosby is facing scrutiny over her political ties to the city and close relationship with Billy Murphy, the attorney representing the Gray family. According to a report by the Daily Mail, concerns about the close ties have been raised by Baltimore defense attorney, Warren Brown.

Prior to the announced charges, Brown said that Mosby was under intense pressure to issue an indictment in the case:

“I think she has too much pressure to not indict, from the pressure of her husband’s constituents, of her mentor Billy Murphy, and of the pressure of making sure she wants to hold on to her job in four years.”

“She’s going to feel the need to indict.”

Mosby’s election to the office just four months ago was funded in part by Murphy, who donated the largest allowable contribution ($4,000), and he is described as being a “mentor” to Mosby.

In addition to Murphy’s support and endorsement during her campaign, Brown said that Murphy stands to gain if the indicted police officers are found guilty, since he is handling the civil suit concerning Freddie Gray’s death for the family:

“I hope her decision is not impacted by his counsel. He has his own prosecution, a civil one, but if she indicts then there is a criminal case. He has financial interest in indictment. I’m concerned he’s running interference for her.”

Despite living very near the area where Freddie Gray was killed, and being notably involved in the community, Mosby will also face questions regarding her other political ties to the City of Baltimore. Her husband, Nick Mosby, is a city councilman.

Warren Brown is not the only one who is uneasy about Marilyn Mosby’s connections to Billy Murphy.

In a letter sent to Mosby by a Baltimore chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police on Friday, lodge president Gene Ryan asked the State’s Attorney to appoint a special prosecutor. The letter reads, in part:

“These conflicts include your personal and professional relations with Gray family attorney, William Murphy, and the lead prosecutor’s connections with members of the local media.”

“Based on several nationally televised interviews, these reporters are likely to be witnesses in any potential litigation regarding this incident.”

Former Baltimore prosecutor turned defense attorney, Ivan Bates, has also expressed similar concerns.
