The truth of it is, police don't care if they catch the actual perpetrators of a crime, and prosecutors don't care if they're actually convicting the real criminals.

In both instances, all they really care about is there case clearance rate. So they can say, we catch and convict X percent of this type of criminal.

The vast majority of cases never go to trial, and are settled by the prosecutor and the defense attorney coming to a deal. Many of the accused are represented by public defenders, the bottom scrapings of all lawyers. In some cases, lawyers trained in other areas like tax or real estate will have to represent a poor criminal pro bono or for some measly government stipend..

These lawyers often advise their clients to take the deal, because, they quite frankly don't want to take it to trial. Many times, they aren't getting paid by poor clients. The pressure to take a deal can be tremendous, even for clients that claim innocence.

Because of all the above, who KNOWS how many wrongly convicted people are in our prisons? Life ain't like TV.
