" have allowed the anti-abortion, bible-thumping to grab"-- Oh surely you know better than that. They don't 'allow it' any more than you 'allow it". Idiocy gets headlines far more than the folks who practice the social gospel. But then, people who don't ever visit church or participate in church communities, wouldn't know that. Some of the most progressive, best educated and impressive people I know are practicing Christians or Jews. But I associate with them, as well as agnostics and the occasional atheist. Generally it's a matter of education more than the particular flavor of religion. Not always true though. Some of the biggest Nazi's were very well educated atheists.
