.because many of them are subsidized by their govts.

The subsidies, depending on how they are structured and reported, might eliminate losses but instead cover losses so they could continue to operate at a loss. They also could eliminate the loss, it all depends on the type of the subsidy and the accounting of it. If you want to make the assertion that they always lose money but that subsidies make up for it, its up to you to show that, you haven't presented any information or argument to back up your idea, just an unsupported assertion. Which doesn't mean your wrong, its possible that your right, but you have done nothing to cause anyone else to think your right.

In any case the subsidies per passenger mile are much less than the subsidies per passenger mile for rail. And airlines worldwide, including in the US (both the large ones American, Delta, Southwest, and United), and many of the smaller ones, have been profitable for several years. Long distance rail still consistently looses money. Airline transportation would be viable without any subsidies, some airlines would go under next downturn, but those that were left could make money. Few intercity rail lines would survive without subsidies, most get fairly hefty subsidies.
