i know for certain that isn't the case with his girlfriend, and previous girlfriends, asian women born and raised in the states/canada are VERY westernized....far from 'submissive' This is how it generally works with immigrants. The first generation bring their culture with them and usually do their damn best to keep as much of it as possible, celebrating their home country's holidays and trying to create a "little home country" environment with other immigrants from their home country who have relocated to the USA. The second generation get forced/encouraged to learn their parent's native language, and grows up in this environment where the holiday parties are all families from the parents' home country, so they sort of have the feeling of being kids of immigrants from India/China/wherever, and they generally marry people of similar backgrounds. But they also get the "normal" American upbringing with rock and roll, casual drug usage, high school clicks and sports, and the potpourri that comes with being raised in the US. They tend to be proud of their Home Country-American status, but they are basically Americans at heart, and if they came from one of these crazy oppressive nations (like, Iran) they will be just as confused by Iranian behaviour as are most Americans. The third generation escapes most of the indoctrination that the first generation forces on their 2nd generation kids, and voila, you've got a normal American child with all the variety in type and opportunity for success and failure that the rest of us went through. By this time they marry whoever comes along at the right time, and that how we end up with people who are a combination of Russian-Italian-Brazilian and 1/32nd American Indian in background, but basically Americans same as you and me in thought process.
