That range is on battery power alone. That battery is charged with a constant speed diesel motor. Diesels, and to a lesser extent gas powered, engines have a narrow range of speeds where they are the most efficient. This is the arrangement that trains have been using for a long time for efficiency reasons. And then there is the regenerative braking...

As to the cost and lifespan of the battery, it all depends on the chemistry involved. Telsa batteries have a warranty of 10 years and unlimited miles. Given that they typically have a daily charge cycle, they are a whole lot different than your cellphone battery. In addition, their Gigafactory is expected to cut the cost of Tesla battery packs to less than half of current prices. Granted, that is contingent on running the factory at close to max. capacity, but the response to their PowerWall products augers well for that to be the case even if they don't reach their goals for car production.

As to your window of 5-10 years from now, do you honestly think that LNG/CNG is on a quicker time table?
