There was a need for brakeman in the caboose - especially before the days of radio communication from the engine to the cab. What happens if there is a fire in one of the cars in the middle of the train? A brakeman has to hike to the site of the fire and separate the car from the rest of the train. On my student trip, we had a fire in a journal box on one of the cars. We had to get out of the engine and hike back to the fire to put it out. We were parked on a trestle over the Toutle River - of Mt St Helens fame.
