I think you are mistaken about the cheap under $1k not being able to use the SDRAM. The boards can with the Intel 430VX chipset which is very cheap and the 430TX chipset. They are both used for PENTIUMs

What one can say is as long as EDO is less expensive than SDRAM the $1000 sysems will be installed with the cheapest.

That's not true. You can run SDRAM on alot of under 1000 systems. The TX, and VX motherboards will run it. Old Dells 133 mhz ect. with VX motherboards came with SDRAM standard. Alot of the TX motherboards can run SDRAM, and EDO simultaniously.
