Werner wrote: Here’s the deal. Those who have railed against the Affordable Care Act and yelled about “death panels” and warned that the government is going to dictate who lives, how they will live, or if they will be left to die, forget that on the old system, when you didn’t have insurance and got sick, you couldn’t get insurance. Had he signed up with the ACA when he could have, even despite being a diabetic – a sure shot for denial under the old system – Lang would be covered. He would have access to the care he needs to save his sight and perhaps, save him from losing everything he has spent a lifetime working for. If South Carolina had signed on to the ACA, the state would have an expanded Medicaid program and Lang would get the care he needs. But because South Carolina eschewed participation in Obamacare, and because Lang decided he didn’t need no stinkin’ insurance and could just go get it if and when he needed it, he is now facing blindness, poverty and living dependent on the government (being one of those “takers”), costing all of us money we didn’t have to spend. Lang took to the GoFund me site to try to raise the $30,000 he needed for the surgery lest he lose his eyesight. It wasn’t pretty. Most of the money raised was from liberals taking the occasion to rip his and his party’s failings while a few skipped the donation and go straight to the scorn. “Sorry,” writes Joel, “I’m way too busy thinking only about myself.” “Call Mitt Romney or Jeb Bush,” writes Jeannie, “they have plenty of money.” “I want to donate enough to really help you out,” writes Ed, “but I can’t figure out how to get GoFundMe to accept bootstraps.” Turns out Lang has become aware that he was misled by his party when it comes to Obamacare aka the Affordable Care Act. And it turns out Lang has had a change of heart. A change of heart that has turned him against his own party. A change of heart that has turned him so much against his own party that he wants to publicly renounce his party on TV. Lang updates his GoFundme page occasionally and according to his latest update said: I would like for all of my wonderful supporters to go to this link this has been the first reporter that has told my side correctly. Now to put things straight I never said that I did not like or blamed president Obama for what has happened. In fact both me and my wife have very close friends that are gay. And they are upset by some of the comments by people who have never met us and passing judgment on us. Also like I said in the interview I would like to rip up my voters registration on TV. I have reach out to MSNBC and ABC in new york and waiting for them to call me back. In the mean while if you would call them and demand that they put it on national TV it might help. Either way as soon as I know when it will happen I will post it here to let you know. Please go to the link so what I am saying will make sense to all. The article over at Think Progress is worth the read. Lang says he read almost every message he received. Just scrolling through some of the comments at Gofundme will give you an idea of how painful that might have been. This particular clip from the article is important and highly relevant as it illustrates clearly that when people are given the facts and the ability to choose for themselves they generally make good and sound decisions. Lang joked that he might be the most hated Republican in the country right now. But he also said that, thanks in part to a flood of media attention that led him to learn more about health care policy, he doesn’t identify with the GOP anymore. Now that I’m looking at what each party represents, my wife and I are both saying — hey, we’re not Republicans!” Lang said. He added that, though he’s not a political person by nature and has never voted solely along party lines, he wants to rip up his voter registration card on national television so Americans will have proof that he’s making the switch. … He said he “one hundred percent agrees” with the people who commented on his crowdfunding page to argue that health care is a human right. In fact, I have some eyesight jokes for you,” he added. “This whole thing has helped me see more clearly. Like they say, hindsight is 20/20.” Lang was lied to by the GOP – a political party that could care less about the people who support and vote them into office. He is but one example of what happens to otherwise decent, hard-working folks who root for a team rather than idea. Lang was lucky, but how many more teabaggers will have to face decisions like this before their eyes are opened?
