They have an artificial environment where they can control multiple variables like water, humidity, maximum and minimum temperatures, and hours of daylight. Obviously controlling water, humidity and temps at an ideal is great for crops - but why do you suppose they add CO2? Because given all the other obvious controls - CO2 promotes faster, bigger, better crops. In your article the researcher did say variable climate and disease etc in addition to CO2 could degrade grass growth and the one take away in your head is CO2 is the cause of low growth - take about stupid. The green house is proof positive CO2 is beneficial and crops/plants in general have been living in a CO2 deficient planet for millennium. Plants evolved in a time of higher CO2 levels - they need more and I'm proud to be doing my part.
