NEWS: CLARiiON Scores Big With AFC West Champion -- Kansas City Chiefs

SOUTHBORO, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 22, 1997--

CLARiiON Fibre Channel Storage Revolutionizes The Way Coaches

and Players Analyze Games, Scout Opponents, and Improve Player

Development

CLARiiON, the world's leading provider of open RAID-based storage solutions and Data General Corporation company (NYSE:DGN), today announced that the National Football League's AFC Western Division champion Kansas City Chiefs are using its FC5000 Series fibre channel disk array to provide coaches and players with instant access to game footage for analyzing games, scouting opponents, and improving player development. The powerful and easy to use CLARiiON FC5000, used in conjunction with AVID Sports' complete line of SPORTSPRO editors and SPORTSVIEW Coaching Stations, allows the Kansas City Chiefs to work far more efficiently, saving both time and money, while benefiting from a totally different perspective on game preparation.

"There are no more lost tapes. No tape rewinding, tape dubbing, tape swapping, tape shuttling, or long delays in getting the cutups the team needs copied to tape," said John Wuehrman, video director for the Kansas City Chiefs. "With AVID Sports SPORTSPRO and SPORTSVIEW along with the CLARiiON fibre channel FC5000 I know the system is going to be up and running 100% of the time. Anything less would not be acceptable to me and certainly not acceptable to the team we just don't have the time."

"CLARiiON fibre channel technology offers two primary advantages for video storage bandwidth and network support," said Larry Hemmerich, vice president and general manager of CLARiiON. "Because of fibre channel's fast speeds, it can deliver multiple streams of uncompressed digital video over a single fibre channel loop. This allows the FC5000 to provide a much lower cost/stream than earlier parallel SCSI technology and allows more simultaneous views from the same video on the same network."

CLARiiON announced a strategic reselling agreement with Avid Sports in July, 1997. Under terms of the agreement, Avid Sports resells the FC5000 Series fibre channel disk array as a key component of their total sports offering.

About the CLARiiON FC5000 Disk Array

The FC5000 Series disk array is the capacity building block for the CLARiiON FC5000 Series Fibre Channel Disk Array Family. It provides highly available packaging for up to ten dual-ported, high-performance, fibre channel disk drives in a modular chassis. Individual FC5000 disk array modules can be configured together in JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks) subsystems, or attached to a CLARiiON FC5500 Series disk array to form highly available RAID subsystems. Connection to host servers, hubs, or switches is through a redundant pair of 100 MB/second fibre channel loops.

Boasting a capacity up to 91 GB, the FC5000 is available as a rackmount (3.5U) unit, a 10-slot deskside unit, and a 30-slot deskside unit. 4 GB and 9 GB drives are supported. The FC5000 is both reliable and field upgradable -- configuring the FC5000 for high availability is a simple matter of adding redundant power and redundant fibre channel paths. All components are designed for online serviceability.

NEWS: Avid Technology Incorporates Adaptec Fibre Channel

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 22, 1997--Adaptec Inc. announced that its Fibre Channel-to-PCI host adapter, the AHA-F940, will be incorporated into Avid Technology's high-performance workgroup storage solution, MediaShare F/C(TM).

The combination of Avid's and Adaptec's Fibre Channel technology for the Macintosh will enhance workgroup capabilities by allowing multiple digital video editors to access the same media simultaneously, thereby saving production time and cost.

Fibre Channel technology is ideal for data intensive applications such as digital video editing because of its high speed (up to 1Gbit/sec throughput), scalability (connection of up to 126 devices on a single port), distance connection capability (from 30 meters over copper to 10 kilometers over optical cables), and ease of configuration.

Also, Adaptec's Fibre Channel host adapter enables multi-initiator capabilities, meaning that workgroups can address tasks concurrently rather than sequentially. This allows Avid's MediaShare F/C solution to eliminate the need to postpone tasks, switch workstations, or physically move media.

"We are excited that Avid incorporated Adaptec into its Fibre Channel solution," said Jean-Eric Garnier, business and marketing manager for Adaptec's Macintosh products. "This design win affirms our ongoing commitment to the support and development of I/O performance on MacOS computers."

"Avid is a leader in professional digital video editing systems, and our consumers expect high performance and stability when working with this demanding application," said Dennis Hoffman, director of infrastructure product management for Avid. "We looked to Adaptec as a leader in system bandwidth solutions to bring these qualities to our Fibre Channel solution, and Adaptec's Fibre Channel host adapter offers industry-leading performance and widespread compatibility."

About MediaShare

MediaShare F/C will include Avid's MediaShare Software to organize and administer workgroup access to storage, AVIDdrive Utility 2 configuration and diagnostics software, Adaptec's AHA-F940 Fibre Channel-to-PCI host adapter and driver software, and Fibre Channel storage with AvidStripe software RAID or hardware RAID capability. The MediaShare F/C solution will be shipped with an update to the Avid Media Composer editing system which will allow easy integration with the F/C product and customers' existing Avid hardware and software.
