I really have nothing to do with flying because I try not to do it. It is a terrible way to travel, and it has nothing to do with drama and everything to do with trying to pack airplanes.

High speed trains may make sense in a few limited circumstances. But we have to weigh to cost vs. benefit and right now not very many routes make sense in that context. The US is not Japan or China. We live differently, we are often more spread out, and most of us can afford and do prefer our own cars. We don't want to deal with local transportation after we get where we're going. There are tons of reasons why most Americans will not take trains.

That could change one day, but it isn't a case of "If you build it they will come." They won't. THEIR circumstances have to change to get them on trains, not merely the presence of a train. When I lived in TX there was a DART station right next to my office; I often had to go to the federal building downtown, and there were stops right there. But I would never have considered riding it. Why? Because I could get there and back before they could get me there. It is just a reality of the inefficiency of public transportation.

The automated, electric vehicle is likely not that far down the road. It would be just stupid to invest billions in an infrastructure that, based on our experience, is not likely to draw riders.

Don't worry, no one would ever think of bombing a train. Just ask the Brits and Spanish.
