"This is insane."

No, this is good. We need more organ donors, to compensate for our helmet law.

Donorcycles: Motorcycle Helmet Laws and the Supply of Organ Donors

Abstract:

Government traffic safety mandates are typically designed to reduce the harmful externalities of risky behaviors. We consider whether motorcycle helmet laws also reduce a beneficial externality by decreasing the pool of viable organ donors. Our central estimates show that organ donations resulting from fatal motor vehicle accidents increase by 10 percent when states repeal helmet laws. Two characteristics of this association suggest that it is causal: first, nearly all of it is concentrated among men, who account for over 90 percent of all motorcyclist deaths, and second, helmet mandates are unrelated to organ donations due to circumstances other than motor vehicle accidents. Our estimates imply that every death of a helmetless motorcyclist prevents or delays as many as 0.33 deaths among individuals on organ transplant waiting lists.

>> Motorcycles May Get Unique Privilege in California

This is insane.

Might as well make it legal........it happens all the time. However, the concept is not as dangerous as you may be thinking. Lane splitting doesn't usually happen at high speeds...........its when traffic slows to a crawl that bikes start lane splitting.

Bikers have been doing it for ages in CA. When I moved there, it seemed crazy to me too. But, after sitting in the freeway parking lots, watching other bikers whiz past splitting lanes, I tried it.

After a while, I was splitting lanes with impunity, all the time. It's not really dangerous, it's probably LESS dangerous than staying in a lane, waiting for some inattentive dilweed to hit you from behind at 5mph.

It's very difficult for a nearly motionless car to suddenly move sideways and hit you. It's impossible. Some of the bigger assholes will attempt to make the gap between them and the next lane too narrow for you to pass, but you just switch to the gap they've made wider on the other side. Other, even bigger assholes will throw their doors open, and it's up to the motorcyclist whether they want to hit them on the outer edge and bend them forward or just go around on the other side. I always chose the latter, but I was very tempted!

The best bikes for this are narrow crotch rockets with great acceleration and brakes. With the vast majority of drivers, I was past them before they ever saw me coming.
