Thanks for the link Bob, I must have been mistaken as I thought there was a chip level redesign to reduce cost as well

Assuming that this info. is correct then Intels base CPU in Q2 98 will be 266Mhz.

Thanks for correcting my mistake.

Best regards,

Kash.

Bob ,Reason why is Intel going to offer a PII-266 mhz without L2 cache

Since the difference in performance between it and Pentium MMX is something like 10-15% at the same clock speed and removing the L2 cache will remove much of that additional performance , I submit that the real reason is that the Pentium MMX will not ramp its speed above 233 mhz except in very low yield .
In order to have a low end product that will stay speed competitive
they have decided to offer a cacheless PII ,so it is reverse
engineering not redesign , as you hinted .
have a good day ,
Brian

Bob,

Later in the article they state:

techweb.com

In the fourth quarter of next year, Intel will unveil a Pentium II 300MHz with integrated cache on the same die as the CPU core, sources said.

I think this will be a more competitive chip, but probably still below the performance of MXi.
