That is incredibly bad customer service. I have never had a problem with HP, but I have never had to call their customer service. I back up all my files, either on USB drives or in the cloud. There is nothing that I fear as much as a Microsoft upgrade.

It may not be HP's fault. It sure sounds like you were hit with a "Ransom Virus" that were popular back then and still cause trouble.

Without regular access to the internet, your AV software wouldn't get the upgrades to protect you.

I have multiple backups of ALL my files and I do weekly backups into coded directories so I can recover versions of files going back years... and I keep these on two external hard drives and one internal drive.

Printing out files won't help you if the house burns down....or someone steals your PC and hard copies so I also have a hard drive with monthly backups stored outside the house...

I'd check with HP directly via their web site and see if the ransom phone number is theirs.... my guess it is for a criminal enterprise outside the US... and new stories I've heard on TV where they often ask for even more say often the easiest thing to do is pay it, especially if you don't have proper backups.
