"The average person doesn't know how to do all of the things needed for a system; that is we have to trust HP if we buy a computer to be sure the system is protected when we receive it or any other provider."

Thing is, the hardware manufacturers make the boxes but not the software, so you are really at the mercy of Microsoft in HP's case. As for 'apprehending' these criminals, many of the gangs are in Russia, Romania, parts of Africa, etc., so that is problematic. No easy answers here, hope it works out for you.

Regards,
John

I believe each "box" usually comes with a free year of Antivirus software. Keep it current and renew each year and you avoid many of these problems.
The average person doesn't know how to do all of the things needed for a system; that is we have to trust HP if we buy a computer to be sure the system is protected when we receive it or any other provider.
Sadly, you found out what can happen if you don't keep it current and connect anything from a USB, CD or internet cable to your box.

I try not to click links in email to any web sites unless they came from someone I know.... also don't open attachments, etc. from the same AND be careful of items that come from hacked accounts that seem "odd" like a friend suggests you look at this file or site and doesn't mention you by name, etc...

BTW, blaming MSFT or HP is similar to blaming Ford or BMW for crashing a car you buy loaded with new technology that you don't learn to use before driving and become distracted while driving.

BTW, the world is full of criminals. Walk around San Francisco wearing a $500,000 watch, yapping on an iPhone and carrying an expensive designer bag and you could met some of them in person. I wouldn't blame the watch maker, Apple or the bag maker for getting robbed.

average person is not illiterate, when buying a computer. he/she knows the risks, and the benefits.
