My only experience with paper tape was operating a photo repeater to generate step and repeat photomasks. Also operated an E-Beam for writing reticles in the 1980 timeframe. That machine used 12" computer tape. E-Beam reticles were typically 10x and the photo repeater would use that to make a 1x master. I got into design later, but I still knew a lot of people with photomask that I would submit data to and understood what they were doing.
