Comcast doesn't make the boxes themselves I don't believe, they purchase them from another manufacturer, one who makes a profit on the sales. So what if the components cost only a few hundred dollars, doesn't mean that's all Comcast pays. All manufacturing works that way, you know that.

I could be wrong, but I'd be shocked if Comcast controls all aspects of production enough to limit the cost substantially. If you have evidence to the contrary, I'd love to hear it.

Also, I didn't pay $90 for an installation. It was free under their self-install program, they gave me the box and I hooked it up. I am a techie, but they make it pretty easy to do.
