I've used flat-screen TVs as monitors for years. Unless it's an HD-TV you may not be able to get high resolutions, but I've never seen a case where 1280x1024 wouldn't work for a flat-screen TV and it should fill up the entire screen. Just reset your screen resolution and it should work. :)
