J_F - You have obviously never been in a situation like that. You take time to think about it and you are probably dead. In reality training takes over and you react to the threat the way you have been trained. The cop did the right thing and the only thing he could do..
Is it tragic? Yes, but the cop did nothing wrong. Period.

There was thought. The kid had been pointing what looked like a .45 at people and when the police drove up he went for it. The officer did the right thing by firing. You don't let an armed shooter get off free shots at you.
