I've known people like that ... had an underlying depression from childhood on and when they got old enough they gravitated to whatever drug was most readily available. Were they self-treating? OK, one could say that, though I know they also LOVED drugs. More than anything else. Willing to sacrifice girlfriend & fiancee, & sell everything they had to buy dope .... only getting arrested would stop them. Only the threat of arrest could get them to give it up, otherwise they'd use it till they killed themselves. Also, I don't think psychiatric treatment really works. It may help them manage the mental illness, but doesn't cure it. It's a lifelong curse imo.

It is a lot of speculation, you're right -- but the most likely scenario is that he had some kind of mental illness that led to the drug use. That's normally the way it happens. Otherwise, he could have been an addict although that is less likely. True drug addicts (BORN addicts) are relatively few and far between. Stop making excuses. He was a racist filled with southern pride..........a pride encouraged by his southern elders. And it wasn't just him........his peers were amused by his southern pride and supported it. And what makes this worse.......the guy has no remorse..........in fact, he looks happy that he did what he did:
