My analogy holds because you can buy a competing OS, but the majority of applications written would not be able to run on them.
For example, if someone sends you a MSFT Word document, you need to have MSFT Word to be able to edit it, and if it is written using the latest version of Word, it would not, for example, be accessible from UNIX.
