Byrd voted against confirmation of Clarence Thomas, Condoleezza Rice, and Colin Powell. I don't think he ever voted for confirmation of any black for anything ever.

About Clarence Thomas, joining Robert Byrd, Klansman of WV in the nays were fellow Southern Democrats:

Jay Rockefeller, WV
Al Gore and Jim Sasser of TN
Lloyd Bentsen, TX
Wendell Ford, KY
Bob Graham, FL
Howell Heflin, AL
Dale Bumpers and David Pryor of AR
Terry Sanford, NC

A number of southern Democrats broke ranks with their Dixiecrat party members. All southern Republicans voted yea.

I'm proud to be associated with the party that started social security. Don't forget redlining ... FDR invented that too.

FDR chose a KKK member as his VP and put another one on the Supreme Court. That's your party too.

When a KY Senator asked FDR to support a federal anti-lynching law, FDR declined and afterward laughed his ass off while describing the incident to his aides.
