but it seems wrong to think that Dylann Roof ran into absolutely no trouble getting his hands on a gun.

It was a birthday present. In South Carolina, no background check is required for a gift. In Connecticut, that is different. Would a background check have made a difference? Dunno. I do know that when Connecticut tightened the restrictions, death by handgun homicides dropped. A lot.
