Are you sure it's the display itself? Can you see an image if you tilt it so light reflects across the screen? If so, it might just be the backlight. Pretty easy to fix and relatively cheap. You can search ebay for parts - laptop manuf/model +lcd backlight. Most times it's just the board not the cold cathode tubes so it's even easier. If it's the display (LCD) it's also pretty easy to replace just more expensive. A lot of times I've seen whole laptops that are sold for parts and it could be a crapshoot if the LCD is okay - usually they are it's usually being sold because of water/drink damage or power issues or bad solder joints on the motherboard.

An Ebay type solution might also be an option, but of course I realize you also have software to think about. If you could get an estimate up front for repairs that would be ideal.
