Silicon Graphics Chairman Sees Mixed Effects From Asia

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Edward McCracken, chairman of Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI), said the effects of the Asian currency crisis on his company have been mixed.

"It will have some impact," McCracken said in an interview on CNBC
Wednesday.

"That impact has been factored into the numbers that analysts are talking about for Silicon Graphics, both in terms of the currency and in terms of the market potential," he said.

"We have countries in Asia that are doing extremely well and some others that are having some issues," he said. McCracken did not specify what those issues were.

He added that in the past quarter, Silicon Graphics has reduced expenses, "resized" the company, and is now able to be "quite profitable at a lower revenue rate."

Silicon Graphics, which is searching for a new chief executive, recently entered into an alliance with Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) to develop silicon graphics for personal computers.

McCracken said the focus of the move is "to produce volume on the low end of our product line."
