The issue of police brutality and racism took the spotlight as 117 countries demanded reform over the course of three and a half hours at a U.N. Human Rights Council conference in May – each participant was permitted only 65 seconds to speak due to the overwhelming demand to do so. Country after country took the stand to blast the United States for its failure to strengthen legislation, with a call to expand education to prevent racism and stop excessive use of force by law enforcement. Senators Barbara Boxer and Cory Booker have proposed new legislation that would require all states to report data to the Justice Department over police shootings within the United States. The bill would require the submission of data on any citizen injured or killed by police. It would not only require primary case information such as location, date, time, age, race, etc – it would also require information on whether the suspect was armed, and if so, with what kind of weapon. Over one hundred officer involved shootings have resulted in death this year in which the suspect was completely unarmed. “Social justice is nothing more than racism,” – SPD Officer Sam Byrd Booker, of New Jersey said that the first step was in “understanding the extent of the problem you have,” and that “Justice and accountability go hand in hand – but without reliable data it’s difficult to hold people accountable or create effective policies that change the status quo.” Senator Boxer of California stated that, “Too many members of the public and police officers are being killed, and we don’t have reliable statistics to track these tragic incidents…This bill will ensure that we know the full extent of the problem so we can save lives on all sides.” While the actions of Senators Boxer and Booker are well-intended and noble, this nation simply cannot wait on a snails-pace Congress to fix police department’s wrongs. A problem that cannot even begin to be solved until as a nation we admit that we have a serious problem with race. While working on this article, South Carolina happened . And on the other side of the country, a cop quit the force and entered construction management after video surfaced of him and other officers shooting at and killing an unarmed man – while prosecutors are “still deciding” whether or not to press charges. The media can spin the leaked footage how they like, but videos like the above show a nation that is increasingly becoming witness to a police force that is out of control. Our cops are being told with suspensions and fall-back career options that they should keep solving crime and the perception of crime with gunfire rather than measured use of force. Until something changes, the U.S. message to the world is clear – murder is acceptable as long as you are wearing a uniform. The United States – where human rights go to get violated.
