Sorry, it just wasn't. Could you have made ordinary people, almost all of whom were NOT slave holders, go fight for the right to own slaves? Of course not. These people were fighting for something far bigger: The understanding that if they didn't fight it was a matter of time until the North would simply have overwhelming power and be able to force the South to cooperate. Which is sort of where we are today, so I'd have to say they were right. Slavery was an almost immaterial fact to most of those who were fighting. It was about political power.
