My record amount of ram in a system so far is 16GB. Several factors was having both 32bit and 64bit systems and motherboards with only 4 memory slots. 4GB memory sticks currently makes sense for compatibility between my computers, but those conditions won't exist when I build a DDR4 system. At that point I'll move to an 8 memory slot motherboard and make 8GB ram modules the new standard.
