Meet Genie, Robby and Merlin Microsoft Agents are animated characters that programmers can include in thier software as guides, coaches and entertainers. Agents can be programmed to move around the screen, gesture with thier face and arms, and speak using a Lernout & Hauspie a Text-To-Speech engine. They can be called-up on demand by the user, triggered by an event written into the program, be written into an HTML page, or read Word97 documents to you. If speech is not desired they can 'say' their messages with cartoon-style balloons above their heads. To try out Microsoft Agents you'll need Win95 or NT 4.0, and internet Explorer 3.02 or later. I've only tested with IE 4.0, (make sure "Play Animations" and "Play Sounds" are checked in: View,Internet Options, Advanced, Multimedia) You could possibly have problems with these ActiveX controls in a Netscape Browser. At the following page link click on "Hear Genie.." to download a character animation demo (a 10 min download). They will introduce themselves and tell you all about Microsoft Agents.microsoft.com (smooth first-time playback is dependant on a clean internet feed.) -------- Some programmer resources on the Web for Microsoft Agents: Costas Andriotis' Agents page (one of the best demo sites):www-na.biznet.com.gr (hint right click on the character and choose 'help', wait for download) Other Agents you will come across via the MS Agent Web Ring page: Max, Gourdy, Nessie, Birdie, Spacemanwebring.org You can also get the full SDK from Microsoft for $30 ----- Related News Groups: news://microsoft.public.msagent news://microsoft.public.inetexplorer.ie4.outlookexpress.msagent Programmers are just getting up to speed in 'agent script' -expect to see a lot from these characters in 98. ========= P.S. Anybody using IE 4 should get the following useful shareware: "Instant Favorites"nwlink.com "HoverView"www-na.biznet.com.gr
