Kleck's numbers made no sense. Taken at face value, that would have meant that close to 1% of the population was using guns defensively every year. Unless you assume that some small population was supremely unlucky, everybody should know at least one person who had done that. Most people know zero. In fact, most people don't know someone who knows someone who knows someone...

And that defensive action is self-assessed. When I was in college, we had a lab assignment where we were supposed to sample bottom fauna in Galveston Bay. One of the areas to sample was at a place called Tiki Island which is laced with boat canals. We were sampling in one place and a guy showed up with a pistol in his belt. He told us we couldn't do that there. We responded that in Texas we had free passage of navigatable waters. Which is true, BTW. He countered that because the canals were built, they were private property. Not being inclined to argue with someone packing a large and very shiny pistol, we left. He, no doubt, would have considered that a defensive action. We just considered him as someone with a tiny dick.

Upon analysis, it looks as if that development was dumping raw, or at least not properly treated sewage into one of the canals. The diversity of bottom fauna declined as we went up that canal. That means the bottom was very low oxygen. This was not true in the other canals we sampled. No doubt that is what he was upset about...
