Paul, They would only do that is there was a scarce resource, like a foundry, to select products for. If they had space, and competent products they would have kept doing it. I suspect they got beat in the craft of making faster ones and did not keep optimizing the 386/486 faster, as from what you say they had space in the smaller foundries, and so they stopped making them.
