Yeah, but not then. Likely why they stopped making great music. I used to go see The Dead in a little bar in Marin County. And I would go see Leo Kottke at a little joint in Chicago, at a front table, leaning back with my feet up on the stage. Saw Led Zepplin on their first U.S. Tour, they were the back up band. They killed the place. Saw Janis in Canada shortly before she died. Was at the Greatul Dead benefit concert at Winterland (after they got busted in NOLA)... I could go on.

Yes you can say there is a lot of hidden talent out there, and I won't disagree. But these folks were pretty well known... and very, very good. So when you're talking the business side hidden talent is worthless. Not hidden, popular talent is worth a lot, and always will be.

(David Milch who produced Deadwood <eternally grateful for you recommending> is not worthless. Content is worth a lot, when it's good).
