Remember that "use a gun defensively" != shoot someone. Pointing the gun at someone without shooting, or even displaying without pointing, could be considered defensive use of a gun according to those stats. There are some good reasons to think there are false positives in those stats, but also good reason to think there are false negatives (data not included in those stats). Even if the overall level is only one tenth what the study showed its an awful lot of defensive use.
