Along the same lines, don't try shorting right after bad news for a company has been released. There won't be an uptick until the panic selling is done, you'll be wondering why it's taking so long for your market order to fill, and then 25 minutes later you're suddenly the owner of a brand-new, rock-bottom short position.

Sorry. Of course, you're right. I was talking options because
of intense dealing with 'em all day. In fact, with LEAPS out to 99
and 00, synthetic short is alternative.

But to think about it, desire to short on close suggests pretty
short term horizon, which might speak for just buying puts or,
IMO preferably with AOL, looking to capture call premium.
