They may have had a CC permit from Utah. Those God-fearing Mormons run a mail order concealed weapons permit scam. Two-thirds of the Utah permits are issued to out of state Gentiles. Recognized in 36 states.

As far as we know, they weren't carrying concealed ... that refers to carrying a firearm on one's person.

Most states have no restrictions on transporting firearms in your vehicle or possessing them in a building including a motel. Their guns were in a motel room they were occupying and had presumably been transported in their car.

Concealed carry isn't even an issue here.
