Ron, this is voice mail and recording is the only way it works. My phone provider has it as an option to email the vm file. Every time somebody leaves a message on your answering machine it's a recording.

The blog you refer to says the most common question is whether you can record phone calls (to which you are a party) without the other party's knowledge or consent.
