My first wife was traveling alone (before we met) to visit her sister in VA, driving late at night. She stopped at a gas station and saw a guy staring at her. After she pulled back on the highway, the guy followed her. He'd pass her, she'd pass him, he'd drive beside her and wouldn't let her back on the right side of the highway, he wanted to pull off. She had a pistol with her, turned on her interior car light and pointed at him as he drove beside, mouthing the words "Do you want it?" He saw the gun, hit his brakes, she drove on and never saw him again. A successful defense with a handgun. With no one shot. No police report, not in any statistics that anyone has.

My SIL heard a side door to their apt being jiggled, got his pump shotgun and racked the slide. The would be house breakers ran. Again, no police report, not in any statistics, a successful home defense and no shot fired.

MY SIL, again, had a pit bull break through the wood fence into his backyard. It bit the head off a small dog. They have a larger dog, female shepherd lab mix, she went crazy scratching the back door .. thinking she wanted to go out being house broken, he let her out. The pitbull and their dog went at it. The pitbull locked on the leg of their dog. SIL got his shotgun again, went out and clubbed the pitbull and pulled his dog in. Called the constables, they're outside city limits. They showed up and though the pitbull was in the backyard and not leaving, they said they couldn't do anything about ... I presume they didn't want to have explain use of their firearm. Told him he "could take care of it" himself. So he shot and killed the pitbull. They have two young daughters, both were preschool at that time. Another defense with no police report filed, no human shot.

There are several successful defensive uses of firearms I know of in my own family. Not in any statistics anywhere.
