According to the IDC report you referenced, their Chart for sales in the US listed Compaq with 18.8% of US Market at 1.578 Mil units.

But, I took this from Compaq's December 9th Press Release from their home page concerning sales in the US:

Compaq's total share of the U.S. desktop market now stands at 19 percent, nearly twice as much as the number two vendor. In the third quarter, Compaq shipped more than 1.2 million desktop PCs, which represents a 68 percent growth rate from the second quarter.<<<

Portables and servers probably account for the difference.
