I assume however, if you upgraded your VMware, it would still read previous VMware virtual machines?

With one computer in mind, would there be a speed advantage having a Virtual Machine on a different drive than the Host System's OS?

Your single OS X or whatever OS VM can be opened on any of the host systems.
