Re: Gateway

Not bad machines, but I'd have to give the nod to Micron as well. They do a great job of selecting top-quality standard components and they put them together in packages that deliver good value.

No, I don't work for them. But in the years I've been recommending Microns to my friends, I've never lost a friend as a result.

Also, where I work we use Micron servers, desktop machines and notebooks. I especially love my Micron XPE notebook.

(OT) Trufflette, Reseller:

Just jumped on after my desktop being down the better part of two weeks.... Saw your Gateway/Dell post w/o more, so I don't know the history. But after two frustrating weeks of dealing w/ Gateway tech support, both phone and on-site, I am recommending to all my friends the local computer guys (whoever's local, whoever's been around for a while) vs. Gateway/Dell/fill-in-the-blank business model. If you need service, you can't beat being able to call up your local reseller and either (a) get them to come out, diagnose and fix or (b) take it to the store and fix. This bit by bit by bit of diagnosing over the phone, waiting for the right (three) parts to arrive, and then coordinating on-site's schedule with your business schedule has made me crazy. From now on, I just want to drop the thing off and have them call me to tell me it's fixed and when I can pick it up. This is not a knock on Gateway, they've been as nice as they could be, and I've been as nasty as I can be; it's just that next time around, I'm endorsing a different business model.

I was going to e-mail Reseller that I will be an endorsement for his business model anytime he wants, but I guess I've accomplished that now.

Been using my no-memory (16 megs) laptop for work and SI; I don't know which was making me more crazy, the computers or IOM's plunging price, but I was able to pick up 500 more yesterday at 23. Schwab, by the way, is lowering its on-line commission to $29.95 as of Jan 18th, so I guess I'll stick it out with them. I had signed up for Suretrade ($7.95/trade), but I haven't put any funds there yet. Anyone had any experience there?
